It's a jazzy week at the University of Oregon Music School

University of Oregon Music and Dance Wrap-up for October 11-17

Monday, Oct. 15 -- 11:54 a.m. -- 12:08 p.m.

Concert: SoundBytes, a short weekly series of new music will be presented at Collier House; 1170 E. 13th Ave. Admission is free. The 12-minute programs, coordinated by Brian McWhorter, professor of trumpet, include new works, experimental pieces and works in progress in a bite-size format. The Oct. 15 program features the music of jazz artist Bill Frisell, with Bill Marsh on guitar, Josh Deutsch on trumpet Andy Rosenburg on alto sax, Mike Ragsdale on trombone, Dan Garrett on bass and Adam Sweet on drums.

Wednesday, Oct. 17 -- 8 p.m.

Faculty and Guest Artist Concert: Jazz performers Andre Canniere and Toby Koenigsberg will present an evening of original selections by Canniere in Room 178, Music Building, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 general admission and $8 for students and senior citizens. Canniere and Koenigsberg will be joined by Tommy Sciple on bass and Jason Palmer on drums.

Since moving to New York City in 2003, trumpeter and composer Andre Canniere has performed with some of New York's most respected jazz musicians. Canniere is an active freelancer and is a regular member of Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, the Astoria Symphony and the Westchester Chamber Orchestra. Canniere earned his master's of music in Jazz Performance from the Eastman School of Music. 

Toby Koenigsberg is a professor of jazz piano and an associate director of jazz studies at the University of Oregon. He has played with such jazz musicians and ensemble leaders as Marian McPartland, Rich Perry, Ben Monder and Bill Holman. His most recent CD, "Sense" (Origin Records), has been favorably reviewed in a number of publications and is receiving airplay across the United States.

Since 2001, investors’ comfort zone with their stocks has nose-dived from little worry about negative returns to growing worry about their stocks going nowhere for maybe a decade, reports UO psychologist Paul Slovic in an interview with Wall Street Journal columnist Jason Zweig about today’s economy. In same article, UO psychologist Ellen Peters notes that American investors are spending a lot of time following, especially on TV news, the economic turmoil. Zweig’s column, however, carries the message that those who have some cash and can conquer their stock-phobia may be a good position, likening their potential investments to a venture in emerging markets. UO's Hutchison is part of ACS's touting of global sustainability via chemistry

Face shot of Jim HutchisonCheck out Jim Hutchison's participation in an American Chemical Society production of its "Global Challenges/Chemistry Solutions" Podcast, in which the society says: "Faced with concerns about dwindling petroleum supplies and environmental pollution, we must begin to consume in a new and more sustainable way." Also, still available is a report featuring Hutchison by ScienCentral: Some are calling it a revolution in manufacturing technology. But, will nanotechnology be a "green" industry? It’s a question that some scientists are saying needs to be answered now, before nanotech goes big-time. (Check it out)
