Flux honored once again by the Associated Collegiate Press
2007 issue wins National Magazine Pacemaker award for 13th time in 14 years
EUGENE, Ore. -- (Nov. 2, 2007-- Flux magazine has received the National Magazine Pacemaker award from the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) for its 2007 issue. Flux is the award-winning student-run magazine of the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC).
Flux, which is produced annually as a capstone experience for students from the SOJC, was one of only eight publications in the nation to receive such distinction this year. Flux provides hands-on experience in the creation, production and distribution of a magazine for student staff members serving as editors, writers, photographers and business managers. Four SOJC faculty members serve as the magazine's advisors. They are: Mark Blaine, instructor; Bill Ryan, co-founder of Flux and professor, Dan Morrison, adjunct instructor; and Jon Palfreman, KEZI Distinguished Professor of Broadcast Journalism.
"Recognition from the Associated Collegiate Press is important to all of us who work so hard at Flux," said Blaine. "Every year we face stronger competition in the national magazine category, and we're proud of this honor and the 2007 magazine. Winning 13 times in 14 years is a testament to the high-quality journalism we produce at UO."
The National Magazine Pacemaker award is considered the highest honor for college student-run publications and is based on content, quality of writing, leadership, design, photography, art and graphics. Flux competes against student publications from all over the nation for this recognition.
Created in 1993, the magazine has been recognized for writing, design and overall quality with numerous regional and national awards, including the 2007 Golden Crown award by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and 2006 Story of the Year awards by the American Society of Newspaper Editors, ACP.
In addition to winning the Pacemaker award, a UO student was honored with an individual award in the 2007 competition. Molly Cathcart was honored as the first place winner in the house ad category.
The online version of Flux with additional images and information from the articles not presented in the magazine, as well as documentary-style footage of the making of the stories was also recognized as a finalist in the 2007 Online Pacemaker category.
