University of Oregon music wrap-up Nov. 29 through Dec. 3

Thursday, Nov. 29 -- 8 p.m.
Three University of Oregon choirs will present an evening of sacred and secular music, interspersed with familiar holiday carols at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall, Music Building, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $7 general admission, $5 for students and seniors. The university Concert Choir will sing John Rutter's "Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind," "Fences" by Andre Thomas; "Little Lamb" by Mary Caldwell; and the familiar Hassidic melody "Havah Nagilah." The Oregon Young Women's Choir will perform "Hope for Resolution" accompanied by instrumentalists. The Chamber Choir will perform seasonal music from the 16th through the 20th centuries. The University Singers will perform a spiritual and a set of music celebrating the tune "Mary Had a Little Lamb" in the styles of Handel, Schubert and Verdi.

Friday, Nov. 30 -- 4 p.m.
Student chamber ensembles will give a "Chamber Music on Campus" concert at 4 p.m. in the Browsing Room, Knight Library, 1501 Kincaid St. Admission is free. The program features Ervin Schulhoff's "Concertino" for flute, viola, and bass; "Six Bagatelles" for wind quintet by Ligeti; a flute quartet by Eugene Bozza; a sextet for winds and piano by Poulenc; a trio for violin, clarinet and piano by Khachaturian; Schubert's "Trout" piano quartet; and a jazz piece by the Jazz Strings Project.

Friday, Nov. 30 -- 8 p.m.
Guest saxophonist Rob Davis will join the Oregon Jazz Ensemble for a concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall, Music Building, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $7 general admission, $5 for students and senior citizens. Jazz Lab Bands II and III will open the program, followed by the award-winning Oregon Jazz Ensemble and Rob Davis. Selections include "Half the Fun" by Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington, "The Booze Brothers" by Frank Foster, "Widow's Walk" by Rick Margitza, "Flux in a Box" by Darcy James Argue and many others.

Saturday, Dec. 1 -- 11 a.m.
The university Community Music Institute will present a free concert at 11 a.m. in Beall Hall, Music Building, 961 E. 18th Ave. The concert features the Suzuki Strings Program and Chamber Players and includes violinists, violists and cellists ages 4 to 17, performing music by Vivaldi, Dvorak, Bach, as well as some folk songs and "Cripple Creek" as the finale. Directed by Karin Hallberg, the university Community Music Institute offers comprehensive, high-quality music instruction to children.

Sunday, Dec. 2 -- 2 p.m.
The University Percussion ensemble, directed by Sean Wagoner, will give a performance at 2 p.m. in Room 163, Music Building, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $7 general admission, $5 for students and senior citizens. The program includes "Percussion Music" and "Inventions on a Motive" by Michael Colgrass; "Japanese Impressions" by Anthony Cirone and a transcription of "Concerto for Four Violins in C Major" by Telemann.

Sunday, Dec. 2 -- 5 p.m.
The University Gospel Ensemble, Gospel Choir, and Gospel Singers, directed by Jonathan Bolden, will perform a selection of gospel hits at 5 p.m. in Beall Hall, Music Building, 961 E. 18th Ave. Reserved seat tickets, available in advance from the EMU ticket office or at the door, are $8, $6 for students and senior citizens. The gospel concerts are extremely popular on campus, and patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets early. The Beall Hall box office will open at 4 p.m. on Sunday. The program will feature "More than That" by Hezekiah Walker, "Thank You Lord" by Walter Hawkins, "Could've Been Me" and "My Desire" by Kirk Franklin, "Victory" by Ty Tribett and many others. Featured guest soloists include Triple Cross, Callan Coleman and Shelley James.

Monday, Dec. 3 -- 11:54 a.m. -- 12:08 p.m.
SoundBytes, a short weekly series of new music will be presented at Collier House, 1170 E. 13th Ave. Admission is free. The programs, coordinated by professor Brian McWhorter, include new works, experimental pieces and works in progress in a bite-size format. The Dec. 3 program will feature the leading edge music ensemble Beta Collide.
