University of Oregon accomplishments
University of Oregon President Dave Frohnmayer announced his intention to retire as president at the end of the 2008/09 academic year. Frohnmayer is one of the longest serving presidents in the University of Oregon’s 132-year history.
Accomplishments:
- During his tenure, the university increased its enrollment to a record 20,400 in 2005, up from 16,500 when he assumed the role of president in 1994.
- Frohnmayer finished the university’s first major fund-raising campaign in 1998 raising $255 million and in 2001 launched "Campaign Oregon: Transforming Lives" with a goal of raising $600 million. ”Campaign Oregon" has exceeded its goal and currently stands at $759 million. It is the largest and most successful fund-raising effort in the history of the state of Oregon. All told, Frohnmayer has raised more than $1 billion in private philanthropy for the University of Oregon.
- The university has added a host of new academic centers and institutes during Frohnmayer’s tenure, including the:
- Center for High Energy Physics,
- Lewis Center for Neuroimaging,
- Oregon Center for Optics,
- Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (inter-institutional 501c3),
- Center for Advanced Materials Characterization in Oregon,
- Neuroinformatics Center,
- Institute on Violence and Destructive Behavior,
- Institute for Policy Research and Innovation,
- Center for Applied Second Language Studies,
- Center for Community Arts and Cultural Policy,
- Institute for a Sustainable Environment,
- Center for Ecology and Evolutionary Biology,
- Center for Indigenous and Cultural Survival,
- Northwest Indian Language Institute,
- Center on Diversity and Community,
- Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Sexuality Studies,
- Child and Family Center.
Under Frohnmayer, annual sponsored research expenditures have more than doubled, from $45.5 million in 1994 to almost $100 million today. The UO added 19 new degree programs, including bachelor's degrees in biochemistry and ethnic studies and a master of fine arts degree in dance. The university became a founding member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. The University of Oregon created PathwayOregon, a program that guarantees that qualified Oregonians from lower income families can attend the UO free from tuition and fees.
During Frohnmayer’s time as president, the University of Oregon embarked on the greatest construction cycle in its history. Construction projects completed or underway total about half a billion dollars.
Completed projects include:
- the new Portland facility in the White Stag Block building,
- the Integrative Science Complex,
- the William W. Knight Law Center,
- renovation and addition to the Knight Library,
- the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art,
- the Lillis Business Complex,
- construction of a new Student Recreation Center,
- construction of a Zebrafish Stock Center,
- three new student housing projects,
- expansion of the Riverfront Research Park,
- construction of the Ed Moshofsky Sports Center,
- expansion of Autzen Stadium, and
- major upgrades to historic Hayward Field.
- Construction is currently underway on:
- the HEDCO Education Building,
- the MarAbel Frohnmayer School of Music and Dance, and
- the Miller Theatre Complex.
- Construction projects in the planning phase include:
- phase II of the Integrative Science Complex,
- the Alumni Center,
- the new basketball arena,
- the baseball park, and
- the Academic Learning Center.
