GENERAL FACT SHEET
Lorry I. Lokey Laboratories
- A signature research institute at the University of Oregon
- Affiliated with the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI)
- Designed to encourage collaboration among a broad range of scientific fields and to create a culture in which highly specialized research instruments are available to a wide range of researchers.
- Analytical facilities allow researchers to modify the underlying structure of materials and observe interactions at cellular and sub-cellular levels. [See Floor Plan]
- Described as a "high-tech extension service" [See "About the capabilities of Lorry I. Lokey Laboratories" for listing of individual labs and facilities]
- Available to researchers all over the world, who can rent time on the University of Oregon's instruments 24 hours a day, seven days a week
- Webcams on each instrument are linked to NanoNet, a next-generation computer network allowing researchers to watch as their samples are examined in one of the building's six major analytical facilities.
LOCATION: 1425 E. 13th Ave., 17 feet beneath the Science Green, an oval-shaped courtyard connecting Huestis, Deschutes and Streisinger halls (east end of the Lorry I. Lokey Science Complex)
- $16 million, cost of construction
- $9.5 million in taxable bonds and lottery funds authorized by the 2003 Oregon Legislative Assembly (HB 5028) as part of an overall $25 million allocation establishing the statewide Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI); the rest in private gifts.
- Acquisition of scientific instruments is mainly supported by competitively awarded grants from federal agencies such as the National Science Foundation
- $48 million (approximate), combined worth of building and sophisticated instrumentation once all equipment arrives on site
- 17 feet underground, and embedded seven feet into sandstone, for optimal performance of ultra-sensitive instruments (Natural bedrock is the best insulator against sources of noise and vibration)
- 62 and counting, number of industry partners involved in research centered at Lorry I. Lokey Laboratories
PARTNERSHIP LABS: Voxtel, Inc., the Beaverton-based maker of advanced photonics devices, is the first company to reserve prime space in the area of the building that is reserved for industry partners.
About 26,500 gross square feet, including 1,700 square feet of shelled space for future expansion of the zebrafish program, plus 1,000 square feet of mechanical room remodel in adjacent Huestis space
PROJECT ARCHITECTS: SRG Partnership, Inc.
CONTRACTOR: Lease Crutcher Lewis
ENGINEERING: Balzhiser & Hubbard Engineers
