Oregon Native Education Day set at University of Oregon Feb. 28

EUGENE, Ore. -- (Feb. 18, 2008) -- A one-day event to prepare Native American students for post-high school education will take place at the University of Oregon on Thursday, Feb. 28.

Oregon Native Education Day (ONE Day) will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., in the Many Nations Longhouse, 1630 Columbia St. Students will attend workshops on admissions, financial aid, career exploration, storytelling and Northwest Indian languages and cultural history. Leaders from the Native American Student Union will talk about clubs and organizations on campus.

ONE Day will emphasize the importance of maintaining Native American cultural tradition while obtaining a college education. The presentations will guide participants in goal setting and planning for post-secondary education, with a focus on Native American traditional values, embracing Native American worldviews.

The office of admissions is the sponsor of the event. For more information, contact Jessica Laux, admissions counselor, 541-346-1312, or jlaux@uoregon.edu. Native and non-Native faculty and community members will lead the workshops. Students will come away from these presentations with a greater understanding of the importance of higher education, Laux said.

Jim Hutchison featured on ScienCentral piece about green nanotechnology

Face shot of Jim HutchisonSome are calling it a revolution in manufacturing technology. But, will nanotechnology be a "green" industry? It’s a question that some scientists are saying needs to be answered now, before nano-tech goes big-time. ScienCentral News has produced a video with the UO's Jim Hutchison, who is noted as one who is spinning gold -- gold and copper nanoparticles so small, billions would fit on the head of a pin.
