UO School of law to remember World War II Internment of Japanese

EUGENE, Ore. -- (Feb. 15, 2008) -- Tetsuden Kashima, the author of "Judgment Without Trial: Japanese American Imprisonment During World War II" will speak at the University of Oregon during the Eugene Day of Remembrance, Saturday, Feb. 23.

Kashima is one of thousands of persons of Japanese ancestry in the United States, Canada and various Latin American countries who were dispossessed from their homes at the beginning of the war and interned or incarcerated without a charge, trial or conviction.

The talk on "WW II Internment and Incarceration: Japanese Ancestry Persons in the United States, Canada, and Latin America," will take place at 10 a.m. in Room 175, William W. Knight Law Center, 1515 Agate St. The event is free and open to the public.

Kashima was born in Oakland, Calif., and was incarcerated at the Topaz WRA Center during the war. He is a professor in the department of American studies, and an adjunct professor in the department of sociology, at the University of Washington.

The Eugene Day of Remembrance is sponsored in part by the UO School of Law, whose graduate, Minoru Yasui, was interned. Yasui went on to challenge the legality of the internment, and to spend his life championing civil and human rights. The School of Law hopes to establish an endowed faculty position in human rights in his name.

Since 2001, investors’ comfort zone with their stocks has nose-dived from little worry about negative returns to growing worry about their stocks going nowhere for maybe a decade, reports UO psychologist Paul Slovic in an interview with Wall Street Journal columnist Jason Zweig about today’s economy. In same article, UO psychologist Ellen Peters notes that American investors are spending a lot of time following, especially on TV news, the economic turmoil. Zweig’s column, however, carries the message that those who have some cash and can conquer their stock-phobia may be a good position, likening their potential investments to a venture in emerging markets. Sense of entitlement? Not in faces at military base, writes UO's Tom Bivins

Tom Bivins UO journalism professor Tom Bivins, sipping coffee and watching youthful faces at San Antonio's Fort Sam Houston, says the often-discussed "sense of entitlement" thought to exist in today's college-aged students was absent among like-aged faces wearing U.S. Army uniforms. His comments appear in a commentary in The Oregonian. (Read it)
