UO campus experiences temporary loss of steam

Several buildings lose heat and power. Services restored within a few hours.

The University of Oregon lost the capacity to produce steam at its steam generation plant at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30, 2008.  As a result, the university was temporarily unable to deliver to heat to its residence halls.  Cooking facilities on campus were also impacted.  In addition, the Erb Memorial Union lost power to a portion of its facility.

UO officials immediately contacted the Eugene Water and Electric Board and made arrangements to tie into the EWEB steam services.  The connection to EWEB stream was completed by 6 p.m.  All impacted facilities were expected to be back to normal by approximately 7 p.m.

Crews are working to identify the cause of the steam loss and will initiate repairs as soon as possible.  The university will continue to purchase steam from EWEB until the problem is resolved.  No additional disruptions are expected at this time.
