Art and furniture design work featured in spring exhibits by UO students

Campus art venue LaVerne Krause Gallery to host more than 40 artists this spring

EUGENE, Ore. -- (March 26, 2008) -- Student exhibits at the UO’s LaVerne Krause Gallery during spring term will highlight contemporary work in a wide range of media areas. Group exhibits will feature photography, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, painting, metalsmithing and jewelry, fibers, furniture design and digital arts.

The exhibits will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays. The gallery is located in 101 Lawrence Hall, 1190 Franklin Blvd. Admission is free and open to the public.


All exhibiting artists are students at the University of Oregon. The work of department of art undergraduate and graduate students from the studio art and digital arts courses and from the interior architecture program's furniture design studio will be showcased from March to June.


Exhibitions include:


Mar. 31-Apr. 4: Group show of mixed media work by Amy Lange, Sam Grunseth, Christiana Cook, Sarah Daegling, Margaux Meganck and Alex Weber.
Apr. 7-11: Group show of mixed media work by Oran Miller, Christian Hager, Jessica Graff, Scott Nieradka and John Gardner.
Apr. 14-18: Environmental Art Show in conjunction with the student-run HOPES conference, an art and ecology event.
Apr. 21-25: Exhibit of work by Katie Nusbaum, Michael Brandes and Randi LaZelle.
Apr. 28-May 2: Exhibition of work by Jessica Hickey, Warren Baumann and Karleena Graham.
May 5-9: Exhibit of work by Karen Olch, Marilyn Skalberg and Christina Dougherty.
May 12-16: Exhibition by Ellen Hunt, Sam Jeibmann and Ian Knauss.
May 19-23: Exhibition by Joshua Romberg, Annelise Ostberg and Aram Choi.
May 27-30: Exhibit of work by Crystal Gregory, Chris Samuels and Matthew Shelley. The gallery will be closed Monday, May 26, for the Memorial Day holiday.
June 2-6: Presentation and exhibit of work by video art class.
June 9-13: Exhibit of furniture design and fabrication by Interior Architecture students.

About the Krause Gallery
The gallery was named in memory of LaVerne Krause in 1991. Professor LaVerne Krause (1924-1987) was a member of the faculty of the University of Oregon department of fine and applied arts from 1966 to 1986. She was an artist and educator who specialized in printmaking, drawing, and painting. The Smithsonian Institution included her in its Archives of American Art. She was honored as a recipient of the 1980 Governor’s Arts Award for excellence and service to the arts in Oregon and as a recipient of the University of Oregon Distinguished Service Award. Her works are included in important private and public collections and her numerous awards, exhibitions and contributions make her one of the most honored of the Pacific Northwest artists.

UO's Dennis Jenkins' discovery in Oregon caves attracts a media frenzy

Research by archaeologist Dennis Jenkins (UO Museum of Natural and Cultural History) in the online edition of Science on April 3 drew stories by newspapers, radio outlets and television stations. The news was international within 15 minutes of a media embargo. Jenkins found human "droppings" in Oregon's Paisley Caves, and leading experts on human DNA determined the, er, poop came from people living 14,300 years ago.
