UNIVERSITY OF OREGON IN PORTLAND FACT SHEET

Key dates
• 1884: UO’s flagship program begins in Portland with the School of Law.
• 1887: UO medical school begins.
• 1914: UO School of Commerce and Industrial Survey joins the other programs.
• 1987: UO Portland Center opens its doors in the Willamette Block Building, located at 722 SW Second Avenue.
• 2006: University of Oregon agrees to lease space in the White Stag Block to expand academic programs and community offerings.
• 2008: First classes in White Stag Block will begin in spring 2008; all academic programs, except the UO Executive MBA program which will continue at its current location, will be moved in by fall 2008. The UO program in urban architecture and the Energy Studies in Buildings Lab will remain at the UO Portland Center this spring.

White Stag Block renovation details
• In fall 2006, the University of Oregon signed a lease with White Stag Block, LLC, managed by Venerable Group, Inc., for 18 years with an option to purchase the property in the eighth year.
• The building is located at 70 NW Couch, Portland, OR 97209.
• The facility will merge three buildings into one complex: the historic White Stag and Hirsch-Weiss Building, the ground floor of the Skidmore Block Building and half of the ground floor of the Bickel Block Building, also located on the White Stag Block.
• UO and Venerable Group are aiming for LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
• The UO will occupy approximately 103,000 square feet with room for expansion.
• Additional building tenants include United Fund Advisors.

UO's Dennis Jenkins' discovery in Oregon caves attracts a media frenzy

Research by archaeologist Dennis Jenkins (UO Museum of Natural and Cultural History) in the online edition of Science on April 3 drew stories by newspapers, radio outlets and television stations. The news was international within 15 minutes of a media embargo. Jenkins found human "droppings" in Oregon's Paisley Caves, and leading experts on human DNA determined the, er, poop came from people living 14,300 years ago.
