Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art hosts Korean textile lecture and workshop
Textiles expert, Jiseon Lee Isbara, to lead special sessions as part of 2007-08 Farwest Steel Lecture Series
EUGENE -- (May 8, 2008) – A special lecture and workshop on traditional Korean wrapping cloths (known as pojagi), will be led by textiles expert Jiseon Lee Isbara on June 7, 2008, at the University of Oregon's Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art as a part of the 2007-08 Farwest Steel Lecture Series.
The day's offerings will consist of two parts: a free artist's lecture titled "Traditional Korean Wrapping Cloths: The Art of Pojagi" beginning at 1 p.m.; and "Pojagi Workshop with Jiseon Lee Isbara" from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Advanced registration is required for the workshop. Cost is $30 per person.
"Traditional Korean Wrapping Cloths: The Art of Pojagi," Lee Isbara's lecture, will present an illustrated overview of traditional pojagi. These wrapping cloths were first produced by women during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), and have recently been recognized as a uniquely expressive and underappreciated art form.
The "Pojagi Workshop with Jiseon Lee Isbara" will explore the various pattern-making processes of pojagi. In this hands-on workshop, participants will use naturally dyed silk organza and ramie to experiment with piecing techniques and the seam technique called "gekki" before beginning work on their own projects.
Jiseon Lee Isbara is the head of the fibers department at Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland. She earned bachelor's and a master's of fine arts degrees from Ewha Women's University, Seoul, and a master of fine arts from Colorado State University. She has exhibited at numerous galleries in the U.S. and Korea. Her piece "Circuits," recently acquired by JSMA, was included in the international exhibition "Pojagi and Beyond" that traveled to the Korean Craft Museum, Cheongju, and the Honolulu Academy of Art, in 2007.
