University of Oregon students receive honors at awards ceremony

The University of Oregon recently recognized outstanding students with honors and awards. University of Oregon student awards for the 2008-2009 academic year

American Association of University Women Senior Woman Recognition. Given to a senior woman with at least a 3.5 GPA . The winner is selected for outstanding achievements in the areas of service to the university, service to the community and lifetime goals.

Bess Templeton Cristman Award. Given to the junior woman who best exemplifies the outstanding qualities of leadership, scholarship and service to others. The award includes a small scholarship.

Centurion Awards. Given to undergraduate students from all classes for their dedication and outstanding service as leaders in the current academic year and for their academic accomplishments.

Dean's Award for Service. Given primarily to seniors who have made exceptional contributions of service to university community, fellow students or the larger community.

Frohnmayer Award. Presented to a fifth-year senior who sustains extensive campus and community during their fifth year of study at the university.

Gherty-Moore Nontraditional Student Scholarship. Awarded to a freshman, sophomore or junior nontraditional student parent who serves as primary support and care giver to his or her children and faces financial need, economic hardship and/or other obstacles to attendance at and graduating from the university.

George Bean Memorial Scholarship. Awarded to students who excel in their contribution to the lesbian, bay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community at the university. Recipients may be chosen for leadership and service in the university's LBGT community, financial need, study and research of LBGT issues and/or a commitment to supporting the LBGT civil rights movement.

Gerlinger Cup. Given to a junior woman for her achievements in the areas of scholarship, leadership and service to the university.

Graduate Service Awards. Given to graduate students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and service.

Jim Buch Award. Presented to a junior who has demonstrated strong academic achievement and whose service has helped the university build relationships with prospective and/or newly admitted students. The Award carries a $1,000 scholarship to be used during the recipients' senior year at the university.

Koyl Cup. Given to a junior man who has shown the most progress in leadership, service and academic achievement.

Mary Hudzikiewicz Award. Given to a freshman student who has displayed a willingness to be involved in campus activities and who exemplifies academic excellence.

Maurice Harold Hunter Leadership Scholarship. Given to a junior man from Oregon who has made the most notable contributions through his own achievements and exhibited qualities of scholarship and leadership among his fellow students. The award includes a small scholarship.

Nontraditional Student Award. Given in recognition of the breadth and depth of experience and contributions made by nontraditional students as they balance academics and other work and family responsibilities.

Paul Olum Award. Presented to the graduating senior who best exemplifies the qualities of former UO President Paul Olum. The award is based on academic excellence, dedication to the welfare of the university through involvement in campus activities, integrity and concern for people.

Phi Beta Kappa. Membership in the nation’s oldest liberal arts academic honorary society, is offered to students with excellent grades, who are of good character and who have completed the majority of their course work in liberal arts. Ray Hawk Award. Given to a senior who by performance best exemplifies the essential qualities of leadership in university life and the promise of future leadership as a citizen; high scholastic achievement; service to others and the university; and contributions to improving the quality of undergraduate life at the university.

Student Parent Award. Presented to students who have made significant contributions to the university while fulfilling the demanding responsibilities of parenting.

Vernon Barkhurst Award. Given to a sophomore who best exemplifies academic excellence, university service and good citizenship.

Wilson Cup. given to a senior student whose outstanding leadership and willingness to challenge conventional thought has stimulated awareness and fostered education in the areas of social and cultural issues.
