UO students putting on show for June's First Thursday in Portland

Digital arts projects and architecture designs on display in Old Town's White Stag Block facility

PORTLAND, Ore. -- (May 30, 2008) -- The month of June will showcase the work of more than 40 University of Oregon students at the new UO in Portland facility located in the White Stag Block at 70 N.W. Couch St.

The UO's Portland students studying architecture and digital arts move into the building next fall. The year-end shows are the School of Architecture and Allied Arts’ first opportunity to showcase the new studio spaces on the fourth and fifth floors of the historic building.

Faculty and students will open the exhibits to the public June 5, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., as part of First Thursday, the city's popular monthly art walk and gallery showcase. In addition, the public is welcome to attend student presentations during the final week of spring term.

The three architecture thesis studios, led by professors Don Genasci, Gerry Gast and Hajo Neis, program director, will have their final reviews June 4-5.

On Wednesday, June 4, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., an architecture studio, taught in concert with Portland’s Chief Urban Designer Arun Jain, will host student presentations on projects that focus on "Urban Architecture in Portland's Central City." Student work includes residential projects ranging from extended family housing in the Sellwood area to larger complexes in the Pearl District and the North Park Blocks. Other projects include a new Oregon Brewers' Guild Hall and a new school for the River District.

On Thursday, June 5, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., two architecture studio presentations will occur as part of the First Thursday events. One studio focuses on Portland’s bridgeheads, while the other asked students to design for clients unlike themselves.

The Digital Arts program makes its inaugural student exhibition on Thursday, June 5, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The show, called Offsite, uses existing spaces and art to create new and different forms of space.

The architecture exhibit also will be open: Friday, June 6, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, June 7, from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, June 8 through Wednesday, June 11, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The digital arts exhibit will be open noon-5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday each week in June, until Friday, June 27.
