Rival Oregon universities to hold friendly Civil War LAN party
LAN party connects gamers on campuses 50 miles apart
EUGENE, Ore. -- (Nov. 19, 2008) -- Gamers will pull long hours this weekend with a 24-hour tournament hosted in locations at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University.
The Civil War LAN, an acronym to describe a Local Area Network, will be held from noon to noon on Saturday, Nov. 22 to Sunday, Nov. 23. Tickets are $15 for UO and OSU students; $20 for all others.
Approximately 400 computer gamers will take over the UO's Erb Memorial Union ballroom and OSU's Club Level of Reser Stadium for a 24-hour gaming marathon. Despite the locations being 50 miles apart, gamers will be able to compete as if they were sitting in the same room, thanks to the high-speed fiber-optic cable connecting the two campuses.
"As far as we know, this is the first time two universities have ever co-hosted a LAN party," said Lee LaTour, a Civil War LAN organizer.
The Civil War LAN will bring both sides together with an interactive video-wall where gamers can meet each other face-to-face, streaming webcams, free swag and non-stop gaming.
Organized entirely by volunteers, Civil War LAN is a collaboration between students, staff and community members from both universities. The event will include four tournaments with prizes and drawings for computer hardware, gaming headsets, backpacks and t-shirts.
To keep the players energized for 24 hours, snacks and beverages will be available. "We expect BAWLS, a favorite energy drink of gamers, will be a popular item," said LaTour. Cases were ordered for both locations and the money will be used to purchase breakfast in the morning. In addition, soda, water and coffee will be available.
The Civil War LAN takes its name from the annual Civil War football game between the Oregon State Beavers and the Oregon Ducks. The Civil War LAN will be held one week prior to the Civil War football game on Nov. 29.
