Nobel Laureate Phillips to speak about Einstein and time
Phillips received the Nobel Prize for his work with atoms and laser light
EUGENE, Ore. -- (Sept. 16, 2008) -- William D. Phillips, who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997, will present, "Time, Einstein and the Coolest Stuff in the Universe," on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the University of Oregon.
The College of Arts and Sciences' department of physics invites the public to the free event at 7:30 p.m. in Columbia Hall, Room 150, 1215 E. 13th Ave.
Phillips was honored for the development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light, creating more accurate atomic clocks. His presentation will include demonstrations and information about how Albert Einstein’s ideas were used as the basis to cool atoms to just above absolute zero to create the most precise timepieces.
Phillips is a fellow of the Joint Quantum Institute at the National Institute for Standards and Technology and a faculty member at the University of Maryland at College Park.
