UO Museum of Natural and Cultural History announces Junior Archaeology Club

Seven-week course will meet on Saturdays from Jan. 17 to Feb. 28

EUGENE, Ore. -- (Jan. 5, 2009) – Kids from seven to 12 years old are invited to get their hands dirty and learn about the field of archaeology in the Junior Archaeology Club, offered at the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History, 1680 E. 15th Ave.

The course will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays from Jan. 17 to Feb. 28. The course is $70 for the general public; $55 for museum members. The deadline for registration is Friday, Jan. 9.

Club members will learn about the fields of archaeology, geology and paleontology through hands-on activities such as creating stone beads, investigating artifacts and developing a dig site. Participants will also learn about the geography and history of Oregon and its peoples. Throughout the course, club members will use technology to record their experiences in a digital archive that will be presented to families at the last session.

Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Admission is $3 for adults; $2 for seniors and youths ages 17 and under; and $8 for families (two adults and up to four youths). Museum members, university faculty and staff and students are admitted free. Admission is free for the public on Wednesdays.
