Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art displays works by Portland photographer
EUGENE, Ore. -- (Feb. 22, 2008) -- A selection of prints from Portland photographer Robbie McClaran's 1996 book "Angry White Men" will be on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art between Feb. 27 and April 20, 2008.
"Angry White Men," is a series of perceptive photographs that chronicle the radical right during the early 1990s. At the time, many outspoken conservatives were urging the country to return to a romanticized and upright past. While the specific concerns of these conservative activists differed, the common thread behind all of McClaran's subjects in this series was a distrust of the government, both in ideals and action. The images highlight the philosophical and political stance of individuals as well as groups.
The works are loan to the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art from the University of Oregon's Special Collections and University Archives from the Knight Library. The exhibit was curated by Jennifer Wall, a second-year master's student in art at the UO.
"I chose works based on compositional interest, the expressions on the subject's faces and coherency within a smaller body," says Wall. "I was drawn to the frank subject matter that McClaran based his work upon and thought it still relevant today."
McClaran's work has been seen in such a host of publications, including as The New York Times Magazine, Time, Newsweek and National Geographic. His subjects include remarkable everyday individuals, the famed and the politically notorious.
