Materials Science Institute wins ETIC grant for outreach

The UO Material Sciences Institute has received $66,177 from the Engineering & Technology Industry Council (ETIC) for work designed to set up a shared science materials resource center in the Umatilla-Morrow Education Service District, while bringing graduate outreach into each of the Hermiston Elementary schools. ETIC is a public-private partnership launched by the Oregon Legislature in 1997. The grant to the UO was among $390,000 in "pre-college" grants given to six K-12 and post-secondary education programs throughout the state. The Oregon University System announced the awards Dec. 11.

Darwin @ 200; 'Origin' @150: Special monthly lecture series to continue on Feb. 10

Charles DarwinPatrick Phillips' opening talk Jan. 13  in  the lecture series "150 Years Since the 'Origin': A Darwin Bicentennial Birthday Celebration" drew a full house and sent visitors to an overflow room above the lecture room in 182 Lillis Hall. The next talk will be Tuesday, Feb. 10, with the UO's Warren Holmes speaking on the "The Evolution of Cooperation." His talk will begin at 7:30 p.m. The talks, held monthly, will cover the evolution of cooperation and society, the evolution of molecular complexity and the interaction between evolution and religion. Immigrants' experiences in state to be focus of Labor Education and Research Center

The UO's Labor Education and Research Center (LERC) has received a $20,000 grant from the Oregon Community Foundation to fund a Spanish translation of its upcoming report on the socio-economic experiences of foreign-born immigrants in Oregon. The grant also will help to distribute the report to non-English-speaking recipients. When completed in May, the findings are expected to be a resource for policymakers, community organizations and educators. LERC is working with several departments to prepare the report.

Google's Vinton Cerf to talk about the Internet in Friday lecture at the UO

Vint Cerf of GoogleVinton "Vint" Cerf, often called "the father of the Internet" and winner of the National Medal of Technology and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, will be at the University of Oregon Friday, Oct. 17. In a public lecture, he will speak on "Tracking the Internet into the 21st Century" at 11 a.m., Ford Lecture Hall, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. (More Info)

UO conference on war's evolution draws coverage from New Scientist

The UK-based New Scientist featured coverage Nov. 12 of the Oct. 16-18 "Evolutionary Perspectives on War Conference" hosted by the UO Institute of Cognitive and Decision Sciences. In his coverage, writer Bob Holmes led with: "It's a question at the heart of what it is to be human: why do we go to war? The cost to human society is enormous, yet for all our intellectual development, we continue to wage war well into the 21st century." He goes on to look at a new theory that warfare is a product of human culture and that it has played an integral role in our evolution. (Read story; subscription may be required)
