• The University of Oregon sponsors more than 150 study abroad and global internship programs in more than 80 countries.
• About 25 percent of UO undergraduates study abroad, ranking the UO among the top 20 public research institutions for the percentage of undergraduates who participate in study abroad programs.
• A record number of UO students had internships or studied abroad in 2006-07 (1,020). The number of UO students participating in study abroad programs has doubled in the last ten years.
• Top three majors involved in study abroad: business, journalism and architecture.
• Top Ten Countries for UO Students Studying Abroad: Italy (17.2 percent), Mexico (10.1 percent), Spain (9.7 percent), Japan (6.5 percent), Argentina (6.1 percent), France (5.6 percent), Germany (5.3 percent), United Kingdom (5.1 percent), Ecuador (4 percent), China (3.9 percent).
• 1,187 international students came to UO from 87 countries in Fall 2007.
• Top Ten Countries of Origin for UO International Students, Fall 2007: Japan (200), Republic of Korea (180), Taiwan (180), China (133), Saudi Arabia (75), Canada (55), India (29), Thailand (26), United Kingdom (24), Germany (22).
• About six percent of the UO student body is international.
• The UO ranks among the top 10 large colleges and universities for placement of students in the U.S. Peace Corps; 67 UO alumni currently are serving; about 30 UO graduates join the Peace Corps each year; 2,300 UO alumni have served in the Peace Corps since its inception in 1961.
• The University of Oregon and the Portland Public Schools have partnered to start the federally funded Oregon Chinese Flagship Program—the nation’s model for K-16 Mandarin Chinese language learning.
• A founding member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, the UO has made a commitment through its East Asia Initiative to encourage faculty development, strengthen regional and area studies programs, enhance academic program outreach and markedly increase student and alumni engagement from the area.
