Statement regarding Daming Xu, math professor
Nov. 12, 2007
The Lane County Sheriff's Office has scaled back the search for Daming Xu, a statistician and associate professor of mathematics at the University of Oregon. As weather permits and resources are available search teams will continue searching for Xu.
Officials have determined that Xu, who disappeared on Sunday, Nov. 4, while on a hike in eastern Lane County, is unlikely to have survived nine days in the wilderness.
"All of us at the University of Oregon join the Xu family and our community with our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time," said UO President Dave Frohnmayer.
Many of Xu's colleagues in the mathematics department joined in the search effort and maintained a vigil alongside his family.
Counselors at the UO Counseling Center and the Office of Student Life are available to talk with affected students, faculty and staff.
