Lorry Lokey's gift (2)

Lorry Lokey's $74.5 million contribution to the UO was a "catalytic gift," says President Dave Frohnmayer. The gift announcement drew widespread news coverage, including:

  • Register Guard (Page One): "UO hails academic gift: Lorry Lokey's $74.5 million will 'transform' the university, officials say," and a Page One Sunday follow-up carrying the headline "The Gift of Giving."
  • Editorial, Register Guard: "A catalyst for UO: Lokey's $74.5 million should send a message" -- Lokey is noted for "having fun" in his philanthropy ... and quoted as saying that much of his will "go to activities that should be supported by tax dollars." Private donations, such as his, should allow universities to take a step beyond adequacy, a step toward excellence, the R-G writes of Lokey's message.

UO's student a cappella group, Divisi, featured in new book and U.S. News and World Report

Divisi

GQ editor (and former a cappella group singer) Mickey Rapkin tackles the subculture of campus a cappella groups in his new book,  "Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate a Cappella Glory." Rapkin followed three a cappella groups, including Divisi from the University of Oregon. Check out a video of the group here and a Q&A with the author in U.S. News and World Report.

About the Office

Public event, Sept. 12: Cracking Open the Universe, the LHC and future physics

On Sept. 10, the first beam ever will be sent through and around the Large Hadron Collider, a brand new particle accelerator, in Geneva, Switzerland.

University of Oregon physicists have key roles in this international endeavor. Come to campus for a free evening event to learn more about the "first beam" and how the LHC will advance the quest of physics to learn about the fundamental nature of the universe.

Kyr's piece debuts with new hospital

The University of Oregon Trumpet Ensemble performed a new fanfare by UO music professor Robert Kyr at the RiverBend Hospital earlier this summer. PeaceHealth commissioned the piece for the opening of the RiverBend facility. Click HERE to watch a brief video clip of the performance.
