Science and Innovation: News of Discovery and Connection

Welcome to the Science and Innovation section of the University of Oregon Office of Public and Media Relations.

This section is divided into four gateways:

Here you will find news releases about scientific findings. The stories are based on publications by faculty in peer-reviewed academic journals or on a researcher's presentation at a professional academic conference. Also appearing are announcements of major grants.

 ►Scientific Endeavors
Within this section are briefs, stories and features about the pursuit of scientific knowledge at the University of Oregon. Topic may center on individual faculty members, the progress of their work, activity of graduate students involved in research and on research areas, such as centers and institutes.

►Technology Transfer/Innovation
Read about the University of Oregon's progress in meeting its objectives to transfer new knowledge and technology for the benefit of the public. While the Office of Technology Transfer handles the mechanics of creating spinoffs and patents, this section is a place to find news about new developments, as well as background material on university successes.

►Science/Research Blog

PMR's science guy Jim Barlow is using a SciBlog to discuss science and research. Stop by sometime to see what's new.

Writer Charlie Gans, reporting in the March issue of College Planning & Management magazine, says the choice of a laboratory workstation exhaust system for science facilities, as well as its placement, represent a critical step in ensuring the ultimate success of the facility. He then goes on to detail the system placed in the UO's Lokey Labs in a story slugged: Keeping Things Quiet at the University of Oregon.

UO = Zebrafish

In 1970, UO biologist George Streisinger discovered that the transparent young of zebrafish (Danio rerio) can be observed and genetically manipulated. He later cloned a zebrafish, opening the way for the cloning of vertebrates and firming the foundation for zebrafish being a model organism for biological research. The UO now is home to the Zebrafish Information Network.
