Food grinders

Top photo shows excavation in progress at a site identified in the corridor of the Bend Parkway. Museum archaeologists discovered that this site was a residential base dating to between 4,000 to 6,000 years ago, when quarrying obsidian from the the nearby Newberry Volcano was an important activity. At right are food-grinding stones recovered at the site, which, evidence shows, became a frequent temporary hunting camp.
