From under volcanic ash at Paulina Lake

One of western North America's oldest home sites
Pauline Lake excavation site

Charred post

Above, crews work to uncover a Paulina Lake-area cultural site from under Mt. Mazama ash dating to some 11,000 years ago. The site emerged as workers from the Federal Highway Administration began upgrading and straightening the access road to Newberry Volcano after it was designated as a national monument. At right, the charred remains of a post from an ancient home is shown. The house from which the post came is among the oldest known in western North America -- dating to some 9,500 years ago.
