UO E-clips, April 22
Top stories for April 22, 2008: Rising food prices draw the attention of the Register-Guard, which quotes the UO's Tim Duy on economic factors involved; demolition begins on Williams Bakery to make way for the arena, reports the Associated Press
Food prices on the rise (Register-Guard): News of mortgage defaults doesn’t apply to you, falling real estate prices haven’t grabbed your attention and rising oil prices make you yawn? Try this: The dozen eggs that cost you just under $2 a year ago now go for $2.82. Or this: The salmon filets that were $6.75 per pound in 2003 will be $8.27 per pound by the end of this year. … “We’re probably looking at some mixture of factors,” said University of Oregon economist Tim Duy, citing increasing demand for imported food in India and China, the conversion of farm land to production of corn for biofuel and the planet’s limited resources, given its growing human population.
Williams Bakery demolition begins for UO basketball arena (Associated Press): The old Williams Bakery is toast. Demolition crews are ready to tear down the former home of the longtime bread maker in Eugene to make way for a University of Oregon basketball arena. Crews are awaiting the shut-off of utilities and the installation of fences. The university is expected to seek final approval from state officials next month to sell $200 million in state-backed bonds to finance the 12,500-seat arena, likely the most expensive college arena ever. The demolition contractor plans to recycle most of the bakery building -- including the steel frame and concrete.
