UO takes a bow for sustainability practice (The Oregonian): Green is more than a team color at the University of Oregon, which has joined 10 other universities in The Princeton Review's inaugural "Green Rating Honor Roll." The university was lauded in the review's annual guide to colleges for its commitment to sustainability -- from a 20-year-old campus recycling program to 200 courses related to sustainability to its chemistry program, internationally recognized for reducing hazardous waste. The University of Washington also made the honor roll.
OUR VIEW; Rebuilding infrastructure - and the economy (New Britain Herald): Congressional Democrats are considering a second economic stimulus package, recognizing that the country's financial situation isn't getting any better. The first one, that check we received this summer, didn't work out as planned. It failed to stimulate the economy - though it did bring a brief burst of positive retail news - mostly because we didn't spend it as predicted. Rather than using the money to purchase big ticket-items, most of us used it as a cushion against soaring gasoline and food prices. And one reason for those inflationary prices was a falling dollar - spurred, in part, by a government borrowing to afford the stimulus checks. ... "Tax rebates peter out. Building a new bridge helps the economy long after the work is done," University of Oregon economist Mark Thoma told USA Today.
