UO E-clips, Dec. 10
Top stories for December 10, 2008: More on the sign of probable change in Portland (the old White Stag one), by the Daily Journal of Commerce; meanwhile, a story in The Oregonian about that sign asks if maybe the Ducks have waddled too far; the Register-Guard reports that the governor's proposed budget would give nothing to Lane Community College for its downtown construction plans while the UO would get $110 million toward projects; the R-G also reports that there was plenty of 'foam-made fighting' Sunday near the UO's Erb Memorial Union; and the Chronicle of Higher Education reported on the change for the June 2010 commencement because of the NCAA U.S. Track and Field Championships
White Stag sign, a Portland icon in Old Town, may change soon (Daily Journal of Commerce): To stay lit, the old White Stag sign needs a sponsor. Located atop the White Stag Building in Old Town, the sign is ready for a name change. “People don’t realize it costs money to run the sign,” said Darryl Paulsen, president of Ramsay Signs, which owns the sign. “Without a sponsor, we would have to take it down, and I don’t think anybody wants that.” The name of the past sponsor, Made In Oregon, is still on the famous neon sign. Under that, it says “OLD TOWN.” But Made in Oregon’s lease ended in January, and the University of Oregon has been paying the maintenance costs, said Paulsen.
With sign, Duck waddles a bit too far (The Oregonian): Portland State boosters said all the right things as University of Oregon administrators worked with city planners and private developers to turn the old White Stag block into a gleaming brick-and-steel shrine to higher education. Welcome. We're glad to have you. There's room enough for everyone. Now, however, the good folks from Eugene want to put their own name on the neon "Made in Oregon" sign that hangs over their three-building complex. And it seems the state's favorite Duck has finally waddled too far.
LCC Downtown Center project would get no construction dollars (Register-Guard): Not only does Lane Community College face a possible cut under the governor’s 2009-11 budget plan, it wouldn’t get any state money to help rebuild its Downtown Center in Eugene. ... Four-year universities, by contrast, would be allocated $980 million in construction money, with about $320 million of that coming from the state general fund and the rest in various forms of bonding, some of it to be paid off by revenue generated by the completed facilities. Projects at the University of Oregon would total $110 million.
Foam-made fighting (Register-Guard): On Sunday, the lawn behind the University of Oregon’s Erb Memorial Union looked like a war zone. Students brandished swords and rushed across wet grass, bashing shields and parrying rivals’ blows. Astonished passers-by stopped to watch as the casualties piled up. “I’m dead already!” one crouched player protested after taking a broadsword to the chest. UO senior Tim Neumann watched the action from the sidelines. “Technically, you have to have an elbow on the ground if you’re dead,” he said. “But it’s so muddy today we’ll let that go.”
Ducks to graduate, then take finals (Chronicle of Higher Education): In a move that may give some University of Oregon students nervous stomachs on their graduation day, the university has rescheduled its 2010 commencement to accommodate the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Finals, forcing seniors that year to march for their degrees before taking their final exams. The decision, which came after “careful consultation with many groups,” pushes graduation ceremonies up a week, which would have conflicted with the NCAA event, awarded to Oregon two years ago.
