UO E-clips, July 11
Top story for July 11, 2008: Developers are jockeying for downtown Eugene property, with UO and other area students among those who may benefit from more housing options, reports the Daily Journal of Commerce
Developers vie for Eugene property (Daily Journal of Commerce): In 1993, the property was considered a prime location for the new Eugene Public Library. But that project finished years ago – on an adjacent parcel of land. So now the vacant, city-owned property that’s near the heart of Eugene’s downtown, may become either a mixed-use student apartment complex, a mixed-use traditional apartment complex, a destination hotel or something else. Five developers have submitted proposals for the property, located at 10th Avenue and Charnelton Street, which the city has been holding since 1993. Among those in the running is Portland’s Opus Northwest, which has proposed a mixed-use development that would incorporate bottom-floor retail and enough units to supply housing to 472 students of the University of Oregon, Lane Community College or Northwest Christian College.
