Breaking News, June 6, Oregonian: LA GRANDE -- The University of Oregon flew over the highest hurdle in the path of one of its most complicated and debated building projects, securing permission today from the State Board of Higher Education to build a $200 million basketball arena. Oregon secured permission to use state-backed bonds for the project and to sidestep university-system contracting rules and keep its preferred firms on the job. The board passed the measures with seven yes votes and four abstentions at a board meeting at Eastern Oregon University.
"It's a big one," said UO President Dave Frohnmayer, who has campaigned for the arena project for more than five years. "But I'll be happiest when we open the doors on time and on budget." The final major step before construction begins is securing land-use permits from the city of Eugene. That process was thrown a curve Wednesday when an independent hearings official ruled that Oregon needs a conditional-use permit for the arena. (Oregonian's Breaking News story)
