Panel votes to weigh in on Taser use at rally -- The Register-Guard (Josh Schlossberg of Eugene isn’t certain how much power the city’s police Citizen Review Board wields. He and the rest of the community could find out later this year if the board’s 2 cents’ worth is enough to influence a controversial case alleging police officer misconduct. The City Council-appointed review board voted 5-0 Monday to look into a charge that an unnamed Eugene officer unjustly used a stun gun to subdue an 18-year-old University of Oregon student during a downtown demonstration on May 30.
Deaths elsewhere (Associated Press, appearing in The Jamestown Sun): Mel Krause, a former University of Oregon baseball coach who was instrumental in bringing the baseball program back to Oregon, has died. He was 80. Krause died Friday of complications from acute myeloid leukemia, the university announced. Krause was a player, assistant and head coach of the Ducks, who will join the Pac-10 next season after a 26-year absence at the school. Krause was head coach from 1970-81. His teams went 218-220-1 and won two conference Northern Division championships. Krause also worked as a scout for the San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Oregon plans to honor Krause with an entrance monument at its new ballpark.
