UO E-clips, June 27

Top stories For June 27, 2008: The news is all Eugene 08 and the U.S. Olympic Trials, topped off with The Oregonian's story on Hayward's homefield mystique. Today's Eugene Register-Guard's front page is all about the trials

Hayward's homefield mystique (The Oregonian): The crowd's cheers chased Jon Anderson around Hayward Field's track as he raced among three favorites in the 10,000 meters. He surged on the last lap of that 1972 race, his competitors sagging as he rode the roar in the stands. Anderson finished third -- clinching the event's final spot in the U.S. Olympic team -- but the race was so electrifying that people still recall seeing him "win" it. "You're talking to a guy that, at least now 36 years later, can say I wouldn't have made the Olympic team anywhere else other than in Eugene, Oregon, on that particular given, 95-degree day," said Anderson, a Eugene native.

The entire front page of the Register-Guard is devoted to Olympic Trials coverage; similar stories appear in numerous other publications.
